Default GW crashes, and I don't like that

Lately my GW has been crashing, and it's not that I can sent a message to microsoft. The game totally freezes, including the sound in the background. I can't do anything at that point. No Alt+F4, no Alt+Tab, nothing works but resetting the PC. Last time it crashed I got a message though, that a serious error occured or something. I couldn't click it away or anything, cause as I already said, total freeze.

Now I don't want to continue playing, cause I'm going for my survivor title.
Should re-installing everything solve the problem, or is this a known issue and is there a simple solution for it?

Sorry if this topic already exists somewhere, I couldn't find it.

Kind regards,

Shouzen.

Well is the screen freezing or the comp rebooting? does this only effect gw?

also a list of your system specs would be helpful.

what is the size of the gw.dat file? it should be around 3.75gb.

without system specs all we can do is guess.

Need some details on what your system is and more about the crashing itself. Asking us to telepathically inspect your computer and determine its problems doesn't work out too often

same thing happens to me. I have a dual core, and spec wise it shouldn't be doing this. It ruined my survivor title. Right before I was at stage 1 it froze. When I came back I was dead. It sucks, but now I get to start over as dervish.... again...

The screen freezes, I have to manually reset the PC.
It does only affect GW, I don't have problems with anything else.
The GW.dat file is 4.1 GB.

System specs:

AMD Dual Core 5600+
2 GB ram
180 GB HD
Radeon X1950 PRO Video card

I have this problem sometimes too, it's bareable because it happens once a day if not at all.

Just freezes guild wars, doesnt happen with anything else, ive even got similar system reqs

That said, i don't know how to help at all, just letting you know you're not alone, and hopefully someone knows whats causing it

*Edit*
While im thinking of it, i left gw frozen 3 of the times it had done so, and returned half an hour to an hour later, and one of those times, guild wars had resumed.

guys, look into your "My Documents" folder and you'll probably find an "ArenaNet.txt" in your Guild Wars folder. Open and read it. I have the same exact problem and it just started happening yesterday!!! I've played for 3 years and this has never happened until now. Your ArenaNet.txt should look like this:

....anyways, I have been quite frustrated as this has happened many times now. Recently I got back into Deathleveling in Presearing Ascalon. I did the setup with my W15 and came back 8-9 hours later to it freezing and the audio looping. My progress has been lost the last two attempts to deathlevel. As you probably do, I have to restart my computer because there's basically nothing else you can do. This is quite frustrating and I have sent ArenaNet already with a support ticket describing all this and attaching the "ArenaNet.txt". I also attached a GW "Test My Computer" report to them. They replied back saying my Nvidia Drivers weren't up to date. Turned out mine werent, so I updated them and the same problem still happens! So don't think updating display drivers will fix the problem. I have just now resubmitted a reply with the status to ArenaNet Support. We shall see what they say!

-Thomas

PS. my computer specs:
Aleinware Aurora 7500
Windows VIsta Home Preumium, SP1
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+ (~2.8 GHZ)
3070 MB RAM (Actually I have 4 GB)

This seems like a driver issue. specifically a video driver issue or a heat issue.
I can say to look into different drivers. Sometimes the newest drivers are not the best. blow out the comp, outside, with a can of computer duster. as for wetwill what drivers are you using? I am running 169 flawlessly.

zamial, i used to do death leveling with this computer all the time. the funny thing is.. my old display drivers before i updated them were from a release date of 11/07 and I did plenty of death leveling then. I just updated the drivers to a release day of 5/2/08 just last night and same problem. So I don't think its a driver issue as I was able to deathlevel before the updating.

here's something to ask: do you have vista or xp? if you have vista, you should have definitely gotten about 7-8 updates on 6/10/08 from "Windows Update". 3 of the updates were probably security updates. These freezing problems only started happening the day i installed these updates. There isn't quite possibly any other cause of the problem I can think of as Anet Support has had me run a memory torture test and it passed easily, and a diagnostic EVEREST hardware test. I'm testing my gws right now to make sure it can withhold long hours without any freezing. So far today, ever since i uninstalled the 7 updates for 6/10/08, guild wars has so far ran perfectly w/o any problems or freezing for the past 2-3 hours. I will continue to keep it running as I'm gone to summer class. What do you guys think? 90 % right now I'm convinced the security updates created some instability on my system and therefore could be causing those RANDOM freezing problems. for the past 2-3 hours since, its working fine! the real test will be when i conduct a charr-deathleveling test over night tonight for about 8-9 hours in presearing and see if it is ok in the morning. hope this helps.

ok nevermind, the 6/10/08 updates from Windows Update didn't do anything to cause this whole thing. I have uninstalled them yesterday and conducted another charr-deathleveling session through this last night and this morning, 7 hours later, it was frozen again with same looping. BLAH

Guys I have fixed the crash problem!
Well, after much trouble shooting some more and with 3 hours of on-the-phone support from Alienware, and some help from some friends, I believe I have fixed the problem! First, Alienware conducted remote assistance with my computer so that they could see all error logs and information that ArenaNet has seen. They had me take out my memory sticks and did a Windows Memory Diagnostic Test for each and every individual memory stick, one at a time. There were no problems found on any of the 4 1GB memory sticks. They also downloaded HWMonitor which tests and displays hardware component temperatures and saw that my hardware temperatures were very good, so the crashing has not been a source of overheating or memory stick hardware problems.

Ok so First of all, with the grand help of AreaNet Support, Alienware Support, and my in-game friend!! An alienware agent looked at my virtual-pagingfile memory settings in Vista and saw that Windows Vista was set to manage my virtual memory automatically, and they were at low numbers. So the agent input a custom minimum PF usage of 2048 and a maximum of 4096. The agent said that when the computer runs out of virtual memory by going over the virtual memory limit, it starts to barrow memory from the boot harddrive, and when that happens, it crashes the hard drive and thus, GWs crashing along with my OS. It makes perfect sense since when the crashes would occur, I wasn't able to access task manager or anything part of Vista to end GWs, so my OS was crashed too. Now that higher custom numbers are inputted, more PF memory is available for better performance and less chances of memory dumps. I also took my in-game friend's advice and switched the minimum and maximum numbers both to 4800 (b/c i have 4GB of memory) to prevent fragmentation of the PF memory, which could cause a crash for sure.

Now what was the main cause of my PC going over the virtual memory limit at the time of crashing, was my SCREENSAVER! Think of the problem thats been happening, it only happens when I'm idle and never when I'm actually playing right? What is on when I'm away? My screensaver. I have my screensaver in Vista set to playing personal videos and photos, and since some videos are really large in filesize and have different codecs to play them, this is the cause of the PF-virtual memory dump and possible instability with GWs and codecs running simultaneously. Therefore, my memory got too high over those low set limits, and crashed the hard drive, then that crashed GWs when I was idle DL. Since I have the screensaver set to select photos and videos at random, thats why the crashes would happen so inconsistently; 45 minutes after I go idle, and sometimes up to 7 hours later! It all makes complete sense to me as turning off my screen saver and making sure those PF-virtual memory settings are custom set to higher-fixed numbers, I ran a deathleveling session last night 6/13/08 and viola! I woke up this morning 8 hours later and no crashes, no problems! I just ran 2nd test by deathleveling this last night and no problems again! wooooot. I think it would have been a while longer at least if my in-game friend didn't help me realize my screensaver could be the cause, but I'm glad he did! Thought I would never DL again and complete LDoA title. After months of breaking from DL, I'm back on my way to lvl 20! WOOT! LVL 15 and 61 % to lvl 16. Crash problemo is solved!
